Stressed out again... I know the feeling!

Manage Stress, Manage Weight

Does stress prompt you to eat everything in sight?

You’ve just lost your job, your daughter came home with pink hair, the debt pile is getting higher and higher and your son needs braces on his teeth. So… do you run to or away from the fridge?
It’s a fact, people who are under a lot of stress tend to do one of two things – either they eat more or they eat less. But despite what they do, more often than not, people under stress gain weight!
The body’s response to stress is a release of adrenaline which triggers the “fight or flight” response in your body. You’re highly energized to either fight the immediate danger (stress) or run away from it! Another hormone, known as corticotrophin releasing hormone (CRH) is released at the same time, along with cortisol. These elevated levels of adrenaline and CRH decrease your appetite at first, but unfortunately, this response is short–lived.
The purpose of cortisol is to increase your appetite after an immediate danger (stressor) has passed. The trouble is, with chronic stress, your body is in a perpetual state of “fight or flight,” meaning more and more cortisol is being produced, thereby increasing your appetite. And even if you don’t eat more…the mere presence of this hormone slows down your metabolism and tends to cause fat retention, especially around the midsection!
So…what can you do when stressed to combat weight gain?
  • Get proper rest – cortisol levels rise when you lose sleep and you may feel hungrier than you would with proper rest!
  • Take a walk – even if it’s only for 15–20 minutes several times a week. Exercise releases “good” hormones that make you feel better and reduce stress and it burns calories – so it offers 2-for-1 benefits!
  • Eat six smaller meals a day and keep the diet healthy! This helps keep your blood sugar (insulin) and cortisol levels in check.
  • Find ways to relax – yoga, meditation, sitting on a beach, reading a good book, watching a film – this works like exercise to reduce stress by producing positive brain chemicals!
  • Laugh – no matter what – always find reasons to laugh! Watch a funny video, go out with friends you enjoy – laughing also releases the “good” brain chemicals that relieve stress.
Just keep in mind, nothing lasts forever. There’s a saying, “This too shall pass.” The stress will go away eventually, that is for sure. Just try to minimize the weighty effects it can have on you while it’s around!

THE AGING SPINE

Oh, My Aging Spine!

Backaches and sciatica image.
Weight bearing exercises can keep help age-related spinal issues at bay!
The human aging process results in many changes – changes in hearing, eyesight, agility, bone density, memory – and of course, changes in the spine. Generally, spinal changes related to aging involve some form of tissue deterioration that gradually worsens as you get older.
Some common symptoms associated with the aging spine include:
  • Loss of flexibility
  • Stiffening in joints
  • Lower back pain
  • Problems sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time
  • Difficulties with walking, twisting, turning
  • Problems returning to a standing position after sitting
  • Difficulty lifting heavier objects
Women typically experience symptoms of the aging spine sooner than men due to a decrease in estrogen production in the post-menopausal years that leads to a loss of bone density. Other factors such as weight, lifestyle, exercise, diet, medications and alcohol and nicotine usage can affect spinal health as well.
There are ways you can maintain a healthy spine and decrease your chances of developing conditions such as disc degeneration, osteoarthritis and osteoporosis that may result in chronic pain and loss of movement, including:
  • Exercise – especially weight training and cardiovascular exercise to avoid significant bone loss. Even brisk walking can help.
  • Lifestyle – Eat a balanced diet with sufficient calcium and Vitamin D intake, keep to a healthy weight and avoid smoking and high alcohol consumption.
  • Drink plenty of water – Proper hydration helps lubricate joints, reduces stiffness and helps maintain spinal health.
  • Receive regular chiropractic care – Chiropractic adjustments help to maintain proper motion which is critical to spinal disc, joints and tissue health.
An aching back doesn’t have to be a normal symptom of aging. As with any other moving part, the more you care for your spine, the longer it will serve you well by running at peak performance!

!!! SERIOUS PAIN IN THE NECK !!!

Is Your Neck Pain Serious?

Headaches and neck pain image.
Chiropractors are experts at being able to distinguish different types of neck problems.
When is a pain in the neck more than just a pain in the neck? When is it the sign that something more serious may be involved? Typically, neck pain is caused by a muscle strain, and one side of the neck may experience more pain more than the other. But when neck pain is accompanied by other symptoms, it may be cause for concern.
For example, neck pain with vomiting and a stiff neck may indicate meningitis. If you cannot touch your chin to your chest and experience drowsiness, confusion and/or sensitivity to bright lights – call a medical professional right away.
Neck pain with weakness in the arms and tingling in the fingers may indicate a herniated disc, which is pressure on a nerve root due to a narrowing of the spinal cord canal. Chiropractic may be helpful.

Neck pain and trouble moving your head without pain? This could signal fibromyalgia, a condition that causes pain in your muscles, joints, ligaments and tendons. It could also be a symptom of rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disorder that affects your joints, particularly those in your feet, knees and hands.
Neck pain after a traffic accident is usually referred to as “whiplash,” because the neck, when you are in a car that is hit from behind, tends to snap suddenly forward and then backward, causing what is known as cervical acceleration/deceleration (CAD) trauma or syndrome.
Most people experience neck pain at some time in their lives. Chiropractors receive training that helps them to locate and often relieve the causes of your neck pain, restoring normal mobility in the neck and other affected body parts.

In addition, chiropractors are skilled at determining whether you have a relatively minor issue, or whether you require referral to some other type of practitioner. Please advise us regarding any neck pain you are experiencing, whether or not the pain is severe.
After examining you thoroughly, we will try to restore normal feeling and function in your neck and other affected body parts, or make a referral to a practitioner who can help you. Continued care will help ensure that the muscles and joints in your neck and back remain in optimal working condition to keep you living life to your fullest potential, without restriction.

ASTHMA... CHIROPRACTIC?

Spinal Link to Asthma

Australian research shows chiropractic care may be beneficial for those with asthma.
A report funded by the Australian Spinal Research Foundation suggests a link between chiropractic and the reduction of asthma symptoms.
According to Macquarie University researcher Dr. Ray Hayek, the study involved hundreds of people with asthma symptoms.
"When an asthma sufferer is under the anxiety of a looming asthma attack, the levels of the hormone cortisol increase. This acute increase in cortisol through a number of mechanisms can bring on an asthma attack," says Dr. Hayek. "Levels of the stress hormone cortisol steadily decreased during the trial, and levels of immunological markers (immunoglobulin A) steadily rose."
Apparently, reducing stress to the nervous system with chiropractic care reduces the likelihood of asthma attacks. More proof that chiropractic care, because of its focus on the nervous system, may be helpful for a wide variety of health complaints.

WORK WITHOUT STRESS !!!!

Work Without Stress?

Stress management image.
When you learn to reduce your work stress, your overall stress decreases as well!
We spend most of our waking hours doing this thing we call “work” so that we can provide for our families. Unfortunately, for far too many people, work produces a great deal of stress, which carries over to home life, social life and all the other activities of everyday living. We dread getting out of bed in the morning. Then we dread our commute, our work environment, our interactions with bosses and co-workers, the very job we do itself, and then our commute back home.
No wonder so many people are tired, depressed and stressed out!
There are certain ways to de-stress your work environment. For example, you can:
  • Make a “To-Do” list at the end of every day, for the next day – Then you will be ready when you get to work the next day, and you’ll know exactly what you have to do. Prioritize the list so you know what to do first.
  • Make sure you have all the details of any assignment and the ability to get it done – You can’t do a job when you lack the skills, resources, knowledge or tools to get it done. Clarify and confirm with your supervisor what you are expected to do.
  • If you are in a management position, learn how to delegate – One of the biggest problems managers face is the inability to delegate. Many feel there is no one who can do the job as well as they can and it would take too long to teach them anyway. It may take an hour to explain to a subordinate how to perform a particular task, but once they learn it, they own it! Result: Less stress!
  • Take a break – Take a walk, run an errand, eat something, visit the water cooler, or talk to a co-worker. No one can work 24/7 without a break. Taking breaks actually increases productivity and relaxes you.
  • Leave your job where it belongs, at the office – If you need to catch up some work at home, spend time with the family, eat dinner, play with the kids, help with homework and bedtime routines first. Pick up your work after you’ve made your family the priority they deserve.
Everyone’s work is becoming increasingly stressful, especially as technology continues to advance. If you want to stay healthy, you find ways to de-stress. Remember the importance of exercise, proper nutrition, sufficient sleep and routine chiropractic care to keep your body and mind well tuned and functioning at peak capacity!
