ADD/ADHD Without Drugs ?

Children's health issues image.
Many parents see dramatic improvement in their child's behavior after receiving chiropractic care.
The ADD/ADHD (Attention Deficit Disorder/ Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) diagnosis is controversial at best, or a sham to sell medication to as many parents as possible for typical childhood behaviors, at worst!

The symptoms of ADD/ADHD include inattention, impulsivity, hyperactivity, and behaviors such as difficulty waiting one’s turn, easy distractibility, inability to focus, restlessness, difficulty following directions. Yet, these seem like relatively normal behaviors that most children display at different times during their childhood years or maybe even at different times every day!

Because of that fact, the definition has been further defined to say these behaviors must begin before the child is seven, last for longer than six months, and be far more pronounced or noticeable than in other children of the same age. And…these behaviors must seriously affect at least two major areas of the child’s life, such as school, home, friendships, and social settings.

So the question that begs answering is this…does ADD/ADHD really exist as a bona fide illness, or is it a behavioral issue that exists between the child and certain environments in which he/she interacts? Is medication really the answer for a child at the age of 3, 4, 5 or 6? And why does this diagnosis tend to magically disappear in approximately 70% of the diagnosed population when the child reaches adulthood? Hmm…

For the record, many children exhibit these symptoms in environments where they are not stimulated or challenged enough or where they are over–stimulated and cannot filter out what isn’t important. On the other hand, ADD/ADHD children act quite normally when they are in a doctor’s office, when they are engaged in an activity they enjoy, when they are in self–paced learning environments or when they are in engaged one-on-one with an adult, usually the father!

Impressive changes have been reported in children diagnosed with ADD/ADHD following chiropractic care. The October 2004 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT) contained a case study about a five-year old child diagnosed with ADHD, who experienced a significant reduction in symptoms following regular chiropractic care. In fact the author of the case study was quoted as saying, “The patient experienced significant reduction in symptoms. Additionally, the medical doctor concluded that the reduction in symptoms was significant enough to discontinue the medication.”

" WHAT A PAIN IN THE NECK !!! "

Headaches and neck pain image.
Neck pain can be more serious than back pain.

What Causes That Pain in Your Neck?

Many people in Las Vegas, Nevada suffer from chronic neck pain. Some suffer from chronic lower back pain...and some, unfortunately, suffer from both! And...unfortunately, untreated neck pain can potentially cause far more damage than untreated back pain.

The cervical (neck) spine starts at the base of the brain stem, includes the first seven bones of the spinal column, and runs to right above the shoulder blades. In addition to bones, the cervical spine also contains muscles, ligaments and joints, with nerve endings that respond to problems in your body by conveying the sensation of pain to the brain.

Neck pain often results from performing repetitive movements that can injure these structures. For example, working at a computer holding your head in the same position, sleeping in the wrong position placing a strain on your neck, poor posture, painting a ceiling – all can result in a strain, sprain, inflammation or spasm in the ligaments, muscles, or joints in the neck.

Neck pain can be experienced in two ways – as actual pain, like that caused by a disc problem, or as "pins and needles," numbness or weakness, making walking difficult, creating balance issues or neck stiffness. It may originate as a result of a whiplash injury due to an automobile accident, the aging process, stresses of everyday living, job-related repetitive movements, spinal tumor, compression of vertebrae, discs or nerves, or obesity.

Someone who experiences these symptoms would be wise to undergo a thorough examination to determine the cause of either type of cervical pain. Our practice is capable of performing such an examination; we take a thorough health history and use specific objective diagnostic tools (range-of-motion tests, diagnostic imaging, flexibility tests, etc.) to determine the cause of the pain and assess our ability to help.

Very often, our patients report relief and a return to health as a result of gentle chiropractic adjustments to the cervical spine that often relieve the source of pain. Naturally. Without drugs or surgery.

Diet and nutrition image.

Raw fruit and vegetable juice contains many essential enzymes.
Enzyme Appreciation

Enzymes are substances that perform two specific functions–they can either start chemical processes or they make them perform more quickly. Every cell in living plants and animals contains enzymes that are responsible for the very functions that keep them alive.

If enzymes are so important to keeping us alive, how come so few people know about them or how they function? Consider this fact: Enzymes are required to perform every single chemical reaction that occurs in your body. If it weren't for enzymes, none of the vitamins, minerals, or hormones in your body could work properly. Seems then there is quite a bit we ought to know about them and what they need to work well!

Let’s look at digestion for instance. Digestion couldn't take place without enzymes. From the time food enters your mouth, enzymes both in the food and in your body are working to break it down into smaller particles so they can be absorbed properly. Raw foods contain lots of enzymes that are necessary for digestion; these are released when these foods are chewed.

Unfortunately, many of the enzymes in food are destroyed by the ways in which they are prepared and processed. Enzymes are destroyed in temperatures higher than 118° F (48° C) and some are destroyed in temperatures as low as 105° F (41° C), so most can't even survive light steaming – a way of preparing food that most people erroneously believe fully preserves the nutritional value of food!
What happens when the enzymes in food are destroyed and the only enzymes at work in your body are those that are made there? Digestive disorders, compromised immunity, allergic reactions, skin problems and mood swings can occur. Eating enzyme-deficient foods also taxes your pancreas and other organs, overworking and ultimately wearing them out. Since your body needs both kinds of enzymes, when only one kind is present, it suffers.

One way to address this problem is through juicing. In fact, juicing is one of the best ways to ingest raw foods as part of your diet. In a world where "fast food" has taken a firm hold on our eating habits, juicing vegetables provides a great way to obtain the enzymes you need to ward off diseases that can rob you of your health and energy.

Understanding that enzymes can also help to heal chronic health problems which often seem to defy medical solutions is important as well. Getting regular chiropractic examinations and adjustments are also an important part of keeping your immune system functioning properly as part of living a healthy lifestyle. When we work together to give our bodies the food and care needed to stay healthy – we all benefit!
