Feeling Fever-ish?

children's health issues image
A childhood fever is rarely dangerous. Think twice before attempting to override the wisdom of their body.

Fever = Healthy Immune Response

If you’re like many parents, the first time your infant has a fever it’s a cause for concern. That’s because many of us have been brought up to see fever as a sign of sickness when really it’s a sign that you are well!

Huh?

Yes, it’s true. A fever is a sign that your body is working the way it was designed. Your body has the innate wisdom to raise its temperature in response to a foreign body – a virus or bacteria – that needs to be destroyed.

Many medical practitioners advise you to give some type of child-strength fever reducer to your child to make him or her more “comfortable” and to bring the fever down. We have a different perspective. We believe that childhood fevers, and the viruses and infections that cause them, play a valuable role in strengthening your child's immune system, making it stronger to resist future infections.

Moreover, when you give fever-reducing medications to a child, you’re overriding the intelligence of the body. This may actually prolong the length of the illness! Additionally, your child’s immune system may miss the opportunity to become resistant to the virus or bacteria that caused the infection in the first place!

So, when your child gets a fever, remember that fever is the body’s innate immune response. Instead of seeing it as something to be feared or eliminated, view it as a welcome response that signals that your child’s immune system is functioning properly and getting stronger. Understand too that giving your child acetaminophen, paracetamol or ibuprofen can defeat the intended purpose of the fever. Relax, knowing that a fever is dangerous only in rare instances. When excessive or long in duration, it may indicate a more serious problem. If in doubt, or if your child is under 12 months of age, consult a medical practitioner.

Regular chiropractic care can help to keep your child’s immune system functioning properly. In fact, many parents bring their children to our practice to not only get well, but to stay well. Parents often report that when their children receive routine chiropractic care, they tend to be sick less often and for a far shorter period than their peers.

Do you know a child who could benefit from a better working nervous system?

Neck adjustments are safe – and beneficial! Discover the truth!

headache and neck pain imageCervical adjustments are among the most beneficial (and safest) adjustments you can receive.

Chiropractic Neck Adjustment Safety

Skeptics occasionally mention the possibility of injury that might occur as a result of cervical (neck) adjustments. This simply fuels the rumors and misinformation. These alarmists seldom stop to investigate the false claims and innuendo.

Rarely, someone who benefits from chiropractic care for their own health issues may be hesitant to allow their doctor to utilize cervical adjustments during the course of their care. That’s too bad.  In reality, cervical adjustments are among the most beneficial, and safest, type of care you can receive.

A significant number of research studies conducted in Switzerland, Canada, Holland, Denmark, and the U.S., back this up. Here are the facts:
1. Since chiropractic doctors don’t use drugs or surgery, which account for almost all of the adverse reactions, injuries and deaths related to health care, chiropractic care is considered by many to be among the safest of all forms of health care.
2. An article that appeared in the February 2002 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine, the Journal of the American College of Physicians, stated, "No serious complication has been noted in more than 73 controlled clinical trials or in any prospectively evaluated case series to date."
3. Malpractice insurance rates for chiropractic doctors are among the lowest of all health professions -- a fraction of what medical practitioners pay.

Go for a drive in your car and you have a far greater chance of being seriously injured!

Hopefully, this clears up some of the misinformation regarding neck adjustments. If you have any questions, just let us know.

FASTING.... GOOD OR BAD?

Diet and Nutrition image.

Done properly, fasting is an excellent way to cleanse both your mind and body!
Fast!

Many chiropractors and other natural healing disciplines suggest fasting from time to time as a means to cleanse the body and rid it of toxins so it functions better.

Critics of fasting say that it starves the body and that regular sleeping and periods in between eating are enough to give the digestive system all the downtime it needs.

So…whom do we believe?
Fasting has been practiced for centuries, for both religious and therapeutic reasons, and is well documented in Biblical accounts. It involves the voluntary abstinence from all substances, except pure water, for a certain period. While most healthy individuals can tolerate a one- to three-day fast on their own, fasts of a longer duration should take place with the supervision of a trained health care professional to coach you through the process.
Benefits associated with fasting include:

  • Provides the digestive system with a rest from its daily activities, just as we need to take a break from our jobs.
  • Cleanses the body by eliminating harmful toxins.
  • Allows the body a period of rest for meditation and spiritual development.
  • Introduces a period of transition (i.e., weight loss, overcoming addictions, shift from meat eating to vegetarian diet, etc.) to the body to gear up for it

Of course, fasting is not advised for pregnant or nursing women, those with a life-threatening illness (cancer, AIDS), and those with diabetes or liver disease; individuals on prescription medications need to check with their doctors prior to initiating a fast.

Studies conducted by Mark P. Mattson at the National Institute on Aging on mice concluded that fasting has beneficial effects on the aging process as well. Mattson said an earlier study found that mice that fasted every other day had extended life spans and a new experiment found the mice also did better in factors involved in diabetes and nerve damage in the brain similar to Alzheimer's disease. Apparently, the cells of the body respond to fasting by increasing their ability to handle more stress, responding with, “that which does not kill us makes us stronger!”

On your next visit, ask for more information about fasting, and what you should eat before your fast and your first meal after your fast.

DR. TED- THE CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTING MACHINE!

Doctor giving posterior thrust.
Doctor giving posterior thrust.

Like lifting a heavy rock off your toe, our patients often report a pleasant sense of release directly following their adjustments.
Chiropractic adjustments are the most essential part of your spinal care

Spinal joints that aren’t moving right can choke or irritate nearby nerves. Chiropractic adjustments add motion to these stuck joints, reducing nervous system disruption. Then, health has the best opportunity to return.

Many Techniques
Sometimes a specific, highly-accurate thrust is used. Or an instrument delivers carefully directed energy. Or a slow, constant pressure is used. Several areas may be adjusted, or just one. Sometimes a popping sound is heard.
Feels Great
Because we rely on adjustments to help your body “right itself", we’re highly proficient.
Most patients report a sense of well-being and ease. After all, if adjustments weren't pleasant, our patients wouldn’t return for the multiple visits needed to retrain their spine!
Everyone Benefits
Newborns, infants, children, seniors and even back surgery patients can get adjusted. Naturally, adjustments are tailored to your size, age and particular health issue.
Find out for yourself by scheduling a no-obligation consultation to discuss your problem.

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. Are chiropractic adjustments safe?

- Yes. A New Zealand government study found that adjustments are “remarkably safe.” Chiropractic care enjoys an excellent track record. A thorough exam can identify the rare person for whom chiropractic care might be unsuited.

2. Will adjustments make my spine too loose?

- No. Only the spinal joints that are “locked up” receive adjustments. The occasional spinal joints that move too much, are passed over so weakened muscles and ligaments can stabilize and heal.

3. How many adjustments will I need?

- The number of adjustments varies with each patient and their individual health goals. Many patients sense some progress within a week or two of frequent visits. Visits are less often as your spine stabilizes. In difficult cases, complete healing can take months or even years.

4.Why would a newborn get adjusted?

- Even today’s “natural” childbirth methods can affect an infant’s spine. Colic, unusual crying, poor appetite or erratic sleeping habits can be signs of spinal distress. Adjustments are gentle. Knowing exactly where to adjust, no more pressure than you’d use to test the ripeness of a tomato is involved.

5. Can I adjust myself?

- No. Some people can make their joints “pop” but that’s not an adjustment! Adjustments are specific and take years to master. Even your chiropractor must consult a colleague to benefit from chiropractic care.

6. What does an adjustment feel like?

- Most patients report a sense of well-being or a feeling of calmness. Since repeated adjustments are necessary, if adjustments didn’t feel good, patients wouldn’t return to finish their care. Chiropractors are experts at making adjustments feel good.

7. Can patients with osteoporosis get chiropractic care?

- Of course. When developing a care plan, your chiropractor considers the unique circumstances of each patient. There are many ways to adjust the spine. The method selected will be best suited to your age, size and spinal problem.

8. Isn’t some back pain normal?

Pain of any kind, at any age, is a sign that something isn’t right. Pain is the way your body signals that a limit has been reached or a problem has developed. Since we can adapt, minor aches and pains are often shrugged off. While they may go away, if the underlying problem remains unattended, the problem can slowly worsen until it becomes more difficult and expensive to resolve.

9. Can I have chiropractic care after back surgery?

Yes. Rest assured that we will avoid the surgically modified areas of your spine. However, surgery may produce compensation reactions either above or below the involved level. If necessary, these other areas will be the focus of your chiropractic care.

((-- MENTAL HEALTH --))

Wellness image.

Sometimes taking a walk is more about your mental health than your physical health.

Maintaining Mental Health

Maybe you know how to take care of yourself physically. You try to eat well, exercise, and sleep a fair number of hours every night. But what about your mental health? Do you have balance in your life? Are you feeling as good on the inside as you may look on the outside or is it all just a façade to fool yourself and others?

Taking care of your mental health is just as important, if not even more important, than taking care of your physical health. They directly impact each other, so sometimes, when you feel depressed and anxious, you are more likely to get sick and vice versa. Staying in peak mental condition is especially important during the holiday season, when stress comes at you from all angles!

Here are some things to consider if you want to optimize your mental health:
  • Take care of your body – get enough rest, eat healthy foods, drink plenty of water, exercise, and don't forget your chiropractic appointments!
  • Surround yourself with positive people – "like attracts like" they say. If you want greater positivity in your life, pick positive people to be your friends!
  • Be good to you – take care of yourself – schedule a massage, read a book you’ve had for a while, see a film with a friend, treat yourself to dinner, and stop criticizing yourself and what you haven’t done. Remember, you are important too!
  • Reach out to others – sometimes the best way to feel good about yourself is through helping another person who needs you – it's amazing how that works – try it!
  • Make sure your goals/expectations are realistic – don't doom yourself to failure by expecting too much of yourself and others. Make a plan that you can work – then work the plan. If you don't get it all done, remember that tomorrow is another day! Don't over-commit and learn the word, "no!"
  • Learn how to simply be – go for a walk, stretch, get a hobby, listen to some music – find ways to de-stress that allow your mind to "take a breather."
If you are under stress, don't let it keep building. Stress is a neurological process. So make sure you are getting your regular chiropractic care. Don't wait for your health and relationships to deteriorate before taking action. To maintain a sound body it's vital that you have a sound mind.

FOOT ARCH DISTORTIONS... BAD NEWS!

How our arch support restoring your foot posture

The Root Cause of Your Pain

If you suffer from any of the usual foot pains and deformities or even just foot fatigue, you want that to change and the sooner the better! There are many available “solutions” on the market for your feet. How do you know which ones are worthwhile?

There is a big difference between things that give temporary relief and those that offer a permanent solution to whatever is ailing your feet. Painkiller medications alleviate pain, for instance, but eventually wear off and nothing has changed (and nobody wants to take pills the rest of their lives). There are special pads and cushions you can get to avoid painful pressure spots, but these just shift more pressure somewhere else and can cause problems there. There are over-the-counter arch supports, one size fits all, that may help a little temporarily -but they really were not designed to help the unique shape of your foot. Even most of the typical custom foot orthotics dispensed in doctor’s offices do little more than what you can buy off the shelf at the drugstore. Why? Because, if they do not actually change your foot posture and function, the way you walk, they are not changing anything important over the long haul.

Feet, like any other part of the body, depend on proper bone alignment and function to remain healthy and avoid arthritis. Thanks to gravity, body weight, sedentary living and the hard, flat floors of modern life, your arches are gradually flattening over time. In fact, over 80% of all people are walking today with arches that are too flat.

So what if they are flat? The arch is there for a very important purpose: it gives the foot a range of motion and function from nearly rigid (arch high) to floppy (arch low). Since most of us have too little arch as we stand and walk, that means our feet are too floppy and do not function the way they are supposed to.

When feet do not function properly, the weight-bearing forces of everyday life start to break down the soft tissues and joints of the foot. This leads to the very familiar problems of bunions, plantar fasciitis or heel spur, hammertoes, metatarsalgia, mortons neuroma or just plain achy, tired feet. The big toe joint, more than any other joint in the foot, tends to develop arthritis. Many of these same complaints eventually require surgery to stop the pain.

The Effects of Postural Imbalance

When the arches of the feet slump, as most will at some point, they have negative effects on knee, hip and back posture. This is because, from the spine to the foot, all joints are connected and influenced by changes in any other joint in the chain. Fallen arches put a twist in the chain that effects everything up to the spine.

Since Sole Supports™ were designed to restore the proper arch height of the foot, wearing them can help improve the posture and health of the knee, hip and back as well.

Postural imbalances at any joint, especially ones that bear full body weight in standing like the knee, hip and spine, lead to excessive wear and tear that can cause arthritis or even disc degeneration in the spine. There are many other things necessary for healthy joints, such as good strength, endurance and flexibility, but using Sole Supports™ is an easy way to insure better joint health every day.

Why Choose Sole Supports?

Most foot care practitioners will tell you that you must choose between comfort and aggressive control in an arch support. They offer a soft, cushiony foam support for comfort and a rigid, hard platform for functional control. But wouldn’t it be great to have the best of both worlds: control and comfort?

It turns out that, when you cast the foot the way we do at Sole Supports™, you get both the best functional control and great comfort. How is that possible? For function we cast the foot with as high an arch as that foot will easily make, because it is the posture of the foot, more than the rigidity of the platform, that gives the foot its functional correction. That means we can make our support less rigid and more comfortable and still get much better functional control.

Sole Supports

Another reason why we can be more comfortable than the typical arch support or orthotic is our custom shape. Actually, it is your custom foot shape, the one we capture with our proprietary casting technique. The shape we use to make an exact match in the Sole Support. By making full contact in the exact shape of the bottom of your foot we are able to distribute all those corrective forces evenly, using the entire surface area of your foot to spread them out. You feel supported but comfortable.

With the new methods used by Sole Supports, you can now have the best functional control with great comfort. Once you get used to that feeling you won’t go anywhere without them.
