HOW CHIROPRACTIC CAN HELP YOU AFTER A CAR ACCIDENT

Even car crashes at extremely low speeds can cause a serious amount of damage to your body. Studies show that many injuries take place in accidents under 20 miles per hour. Image what could happen if you are involved in a car crash at a high speed! Even if you don’t experience immediate pain, it is very wise and highly recommended to visit a chiropractor after a car accident to make sure that you spine hasn’t become misaligned and that your body has not sustained any other injuries that are perhaps, at this point in time, unknown to you.

There are dozens of wrecks every day in Las Vegas—some major, some minor—and many leave their victims injured, sometimes for the rest of their lives. Many that are involved in a car accident think that they are fine because they don’t experience any initial pain. Remember, just because you are not experiencing any pain does not mean that you are not hurt! This is a common misconception made by many, but almost all car crashes jolt the body to some degree. Many experience shock since their bodies are in fight-or-flight mode, which blocks the pain from being felt. Some people experience pain the next day, while it can takes weeks or months for some to experience their injuries.

Problems such as whiplash can typically be felt within the first few days. Whiplash is a result of a jolt to the spine and is felt in the neck or back region. Some cases of whiplash just cause mild pain because the muscles tense up, but more severe cases can cause excruciating pain and can misalign vertebrae in some individuals. There are also many more injuries that can occur, such as herniated discs or bone fractures. These types of accidents can cause chronic problems if not taken care of immediately, which is why it is important to be seen by a chiropractor as soon as possible. Here is what you can expect:

Chiropractors specialize in complementary and alternative medicine. They diagnose, treat, and prevent disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system. A chiropractor will use manual techniques to manipulate the positions of vertebrae to alleviate pain and maintain correct positions.

When visiting a chiropractor after a car crash, it is important to tell them as much as possible about the car crash so they can recreate the scenario and inspect all areas that may be affected. If possible, it’s a good idea to write down and bring a summary of everything you remember about the accident, including the area of your car that was impacted, as well as the position in which you were seated, the position you ended up in after the accident, and any symptoms that you may feel.

The chiropractor may want to conduct an X-ray to check for fractures and will probably conduct a full inspection of your neck and back. After their examination and diagnosis, they will form a plan of treatment to get you on your way to a full recovery. There are several methods of reducing muscle stiffness and pain and they will probably do an adjustment to correct anything that may be out of place.

Chiropractors are relatively cheap and often cost much less for the diagnosis and treatment than a medical doctor. Medical doctors aren’t as familiar with the specifics of the neck and back so they often order MRI’s and other expensive scans when a chiropractor can identify the issues immediately, without all the extra expenses. Most chiropractors accept health insurance as well.

With all of the high-traffic areas in Las Vegas, it is likely that you may find yourself the unlucky victim of a car accident at some point. If you are involved in a car accident, don’t make the common mistake that so many do and avoid seeking medical attention. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Ted Sim as soon as possible.

MIGRAINES... CHIROPRACTIC HELPS!

Woman with migraine
Eliminate a common cause of headaches with a regular chiropractic checkup.

Can Chiropractic Manage Migraines?

You’re in agony, in a darkened room, with no sound. Your throbbing head feels as though it is splitting in half and you’re nauseous, maybe even vomiting. You have a migraine and you just want the pain to go away…and never come back.

What Causes a Migraine Headache?

There are many triggers – the most common are:
  • Foods, including alcohol, aged cheese, caffeine, chocolate, artificial sweeteners and seasonings (MSG)
  • Hormonal changes, related to a drop in estrogen levels, which may occur before a woman’s monthly period. Birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy can also trigger migraines
  • Medications
  • Stress
  • Too much/too little sleep
  • Weather changes or changes in time zone or altitude
  • External factors, such as bright lights, certain smells (perfume) or second-hand smoke
Typical medical treatment for migraines is prescribed preventative and symptom-relieving medication.

Positive Results with Chiropractic Care

A number of research studies have examined the effects of chiropractic care on the frequency, intensity and duration of migraine headaches. One such study, conducted for six months at the Chiropractic Research Center of Macquarie University in Australia, involved 177 participants who had migraine headaches for an average of 18 years.

The results of the study were impressive; most of the participants experienced positive outcomes. Seventy-two percent had substantial reduction or noticeable improvement in their symptoms, including a drop in the frequency, intensity and duration of their migraines, and a decreased need for their migraine medications.

Consider the All-natural Approach

If you or someone you love suffers from migraine headaches, or any other type of headache, please consider all-natural, conservative chiropractic care. Ask to see our testimonials; we have many patients who are grateful for the headache relief they have experienced as a result of chiropractic care.

Trouble sleeping? Well let me adjust that!

Woman stretching after a good nights sleep
Get a full nights rest after your chiropractic adjustment and enjoy feeling refreshed in morning.

Insomnia and What You Can Do About It

We all know that getting a good night’s rest is an important part of maintaining good health. And, we know that missing out on sleep can affect how we function, our energy and our moods.

So, if you’re having problems falling or staying asleep, let’s do something about it! There’s a lot you can do naturally before relying on a sleep aid, so give a natural solution a try before reaching for a pill.

About 10% of us experience chronic sleep difficulties. Unfortunately, the number of people using prescription drugs to treat insomnia has increased, while the true causes for insomnia are left unaddressed. So, let’s take a deeper look.

What Exactly is Insomnia?

Here are a few indicators that you may be dealing with insomnia:
  • Trouble falling asleep in the evening
  • Waking up repeatedly throughout the night
  • Waking up too early in the morning, unable to get back to sleep
  • Waking up feeling tired instead of refreshed
Drowsiness or fatigue during the day, problems concentrating, low energy and irritability; even weight gain are all problems associated with not getting enough sleep. The lack of sleep can take physical tolls on your body as well, such as poor posture or dark “bags” under your eyes. And, we know how much you want to avoid that… so read on.

Some Causes of Sleeplessness:

Emotions running wild. For some, lack of sleep may be a sign of grief, unhappiness, depression or other emotional concerns. For others, anxiety, worries or an ongoing mental to-do list get in the way of getting to sleep.
Food and drink. Sometimes, excessive amounts of food, alcohol or caffeine before bed can make falling asleep and staying asleep challenging. So avoid evening use of alcohol, food, caffeine or smoking as that could help you sleep better.
Exposure to light. The body’s biological clock, which regulates our sleep-wake cycles, is strongly affected by light. Melatonin, an important hormone, affects both our desire to sleep and the quality of our sleep. Darkness enhances melatonin production, while light inhibits it. Therefore, those who don’t get enough exposure to direct sunlight, can suffer similar types of insomnia.
Being inactive. Regular exercise will tire you out so you’ll fall asleep faster! If you’re having a hard time fitting exercise into your schedule, try fitting a family walk with the dog or even a friend once a day to get some fresh air and a little exercise.

What Can You Do To Get Some Rest?

Chiropractic care for proper function and sweet dreams. In our practice, many of patients report vastly improved sleep patterns after beginning regular chiropractic care. Why? The act of removing interferences in the nervous system often helps with the natural processes of the body, including sleep. You could be one of many who start getting a full night’s rest and enjoy feeling refreshed in the morning after visiting us.
Relax. Little changes in your day can make a huge difference at night. Read, listen to music, write in a journal or take a warm bath before bed. Also, try to avoid upsetting discussions, stressful work, etc. before bedtime so you can relax. Then, dim the lights throughout the house and stay off technology to give your mind a hint it’s bed time.
The Last Resort. Sleep problems are not the result of a sleeping pill shortage! While convenient (and potentially addictive), drugs merely mask the real problem. And while you may sleep, the quality of your sleep from a drug-induced stupor is hardly the rejuvenation you need! But you knew that.
See what’s possible when you have a better working nervous system! By utilizing today’s chiropractic care and tweaking your routines, you can get better, more refreshing sleep to make each day just a little brighter!

Give us a call so we can help ensure you stay on track and get the rest you need to wake up on the right side of the bed!

ARTHRITIS... what kind do you have?

arthritis pain in the wrist and hand
Arthritis comes in over 100 varieties, but it doesn’t have to strike you!

Numerous Types of Arthritis?

As we age, many of us start to feel pain in certain joints, particularly in the hands, hips, knees, feet and spine. This seems especially common in women. A doctor might make the broad diagnosis of arthritis, an inflammation of the joint that causes pain and stiffness, but do you know that there are at least 100 different types of arthritis that fall under this very broad umbrella?

The most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis, which occurs when the cartilage between the bones in the joint breaks down, causing pain as the bones grind against one another. Typical causes are aging, repetitive use, being overweight and a family history of the disease.

Rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disorder of the joints that usually begins between the ages of 30 – 50, is also quite common. Symptoms that include swelling, redness and a feeling of warmth usually begin in the small joints of the fingers, wrists and feet. More common in women than men, this condition can be very disabling, affecting one’s ability to work and lead a normal life.

Other common types of arthritis include gout, lupus, fibromyalgia, Scleroderma and carpal tunnel syndrome. Depending on the type and severity of the condition, physical therapy and different combinations of drugs may be prescribed to relieve pain and reduce swelling.

Can Chiropractic Help Your Joint Pain?

Chiropractic care may be helpful at both preventing arthritis and in reducing pain and lack of mobility in those who already have the condition. How? When a person has arthritis, pain keeps them from moving. Lack of movement reduces the use of the joint and decreases range of motion, which makes the condition worse.

Chiropractic adjustments may help to increase mobility in the joints, causing more movement and a reduction in pain. They also may help slow down the progression of the arthritic condition.
Chiropractic care may also help prevent arthritic conditions because it encourages specific behaviors and habits that contribute to an overall healthy lifestyle, such as diet, proper weight maintenance and exercise.

In addition, chiropractic adjustments help to keep the spine properly aligned and the nervous system, which controls the immune system, functioning optimally.

BEEN IN AN AUTO ACCIDENT?

Auto Accidents

Automobile accident
Don’t be misled by the minimal damage to your car. People react much differently than glass, plastic and metal!
It started with a routine trip to the store, on your way to work or maybe even coming home from the gym...
Suddenly you hear a screeching of tires and the harsh sound of metal hitting metal. In the split second before you can brace yourself, you feel your car moving from some unseen force!

Hidden Damage

It’s tempting to minimize your own injuries because your car has sustained little or no damage. Research shows that occupants can be injured considerably more than what you’d expect from a dented fender or a broken taillight.

The Medical Solution

If you visit the emergency room, you may be given a clean bill of health because you don’t have any broken bones. You might get a prescription to reduce the muscle spasms caused by structural changes in your neck or lower back.
After what you’ve been through, you’ll need a health professional that truly understands soft tissue injuries, spinal biomechanics and rehabilitation strategies.

We Can Help

Whether it was a little incident in the parking lot, or two cars attempting to occupy the same space in an intersection, you need people who know how to work with lawyers and insurance companies.
If you’ve been in a car accident, give us a call. We’ve been through this many times. Not only can we usually offer drug-free care, we can help put this behind you once and for all.

Common Questions

  • Why do I have pain in my arms and hands?
Because the nerves to the arms and hands exit the spine through the injured area of the neck, numbness and tingling are common.

  • Why did my headaches start more than a week after my accident?
Whether you’ve been in an accident, stressed at work, or over-exerted yourself in the garden, your body is constantly adapting to the environment. When your capacity to adapt is exhausted, symptoms can appear. This can take days, weeks, months or years to occur.

  • Will I ever be normal again?
Many chiropractic patients report improved spinal function and a reduction of their symptoms. Those who delay seeking appropriate care often discover that scar tissue and long-standing spinal instability increases the recovery period.

What Exactly is a Vertebral Subluxation?

What Exactly is a Vertebral Subluxation?

X-ray of neck
Vertebral Subluxations may occur when vertebrae in the spine are misaligned or move out of place.
It goes by different names: Subluxation, Vertebral Subluxation, Vertebral Subluxation Complex or simply Nerve Interference. Regardless of its name, it’s probably new to you. Turns out, chiropractors are the only licensed professionals who know how to detect and reduce it. But what exactly is it?
Vertebral Subluxations occur when spinal vertebrae lose their normal motion or position. This can irritate nearby nerves that pass out from the spinal column to organs and tissues of your body.
Because nerves carry messages between your brain and your body, controlling and regulating everything, vertebral subluxations are very important!
There are three main causes:
  • Physical causes, such as a car accident, a slip or fall, a sports injury, repetitive movements, improper lifting, inadequate sleep and bad posture.
  • Emotional causes, such as grief over the death of a loved one, anger and other negative emotions that affect muscle tone can produce a burden on your body.
  • Chemical causes, that may result from poor nutrition, smoking, alcohol and substance abuse and toxins in your external environment, food and water.
Chiropractors receive special training to adjust the spine, which is designed to help reduce the nerve interference and allow the body to function more normally. Longstanding vertebral subluxations can produce unhelpful muscle patterns that may require a series of frequent visits to strengthen and retrain.
The biggest problem with vertebral subluxations is the fact that you often don’t even know that you have them!
Regular chiropractic checkups, even without obvious symptoms, can keep your nervous system in tip-top working order; much the same as receiving regular dental care keeps your teeth and gums healthy. If you have any questions about vertebral subluxations or the effects that they can have on your health, please be sure to ask at your next visit.
